CHAPTER 4

THE LIAR FROM LEBANON

Jihad al-nikah.”

Layla Medina sifted the repugnant words through clenched teeth. She stared at the stream of black-robed figures moving past the window of her apartment.

Dark eyes from Tunisia and other parts of Syria—most belonging to teenage girls, a few women in their twenties, none older than thirtysomething—peered through the openings in each niqab. “Sexual jihad” was now official.

A few years before, Lotfi Ben Jeddou, interior minister of Tunisia, had told the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia that girls were traveling from his country to Syria, offering themselves in temporary marriage to Islamic State fighters. He honored their contribution, giving comfort to Muslim warriors during the continuing war against Bashar al-Assad.

Layla seethed as she recalled a report in which some of these “devoted” women bragged of servicing anywhere from fifty to one hundred different men. She adjusted her own niqab, took the hand of her six-year-old son, Bishara, and headed out her front door. On her way to the souk to buy lentils and bread for her family’s evening meal, she joined the migration of women doing their part in the holy war.

Some managed to walk casually, but Layla could sense the revolting pride among the jihad al-nikah warriors. Even though only their eyes were visible, they obviously wanted everyone to acknowledge their act of service for the ISIS cause. Dozens moved every day along the streets that ran just north of the Euphrates River near downtown Raqqa, Syria. It was the path to government buildings seized from Assad’s troops by the terrorists.

Islamic State leaders validated the twisted practice. They encouraged the volunteer sex slaves by bragging about the number of women who had joined the great fight against Bashar al-Assad and the Alawite-led government of Syria.

As Layla drifted among the other females, she conversed with herself about the spectacle and sneered, unseen behind her covering, at the women she passed. She tightened her grip on Bishara’s hand and whispered under her breath, “These women fool themselves into thinking they’re serving Allah. But they’re serving only the lusts of men. They strut around Raqqa like princesses, their arrogance as offensive as the stench of their rancid perfume.

“And how does the great Islamic State have any time to fight the Syrian Arab Army? They’re too busy with women.”

She paused as a new thought entered her stream of conversation. “And how is it okay for men to have as many wives as they want? For a woman to do that would mean a death sentence.” She squinted at a group of women. “Except in war, of course. Then we can have as many men as we want!

“These streetwalkers make me want to vomit. I don’t care if they do want to help bring down Assad. Anytime women throw themselves at men—in war or peace—they are whores.”

Layla stopped and eyed a group of about thirty women gathered in front of a partially bombed-out building.
